God's word

I am an anxious person. I wish I wasn’t, but I can’t seem to help it. I worry particularly about things that I have no control over and I assume that the worst possible outcome is the most likely, even if my logical brain tells me that probably won’t be the case. Like many of us, my anxiety comes and goes – it’s often worse when I’m tired, or when there are big life changes on the horizon.

How does faith help when anxiety threatens to overwhelm me?

For me, there are two things that help a lot. I ask friends I trust to pray God’s peace for me and it makes a difference. And I try hard to remind myself of biblical truth. I saw a useful blog post the other day which rightly cautioned against taking Bible verses out of context. But I think that the Bible is pretty unequivocal in what it says about worry, so when I feel anxious I read verses like those below - not to make me feel guilty about worrying when Jesus tells us not to (!) - but to remind me that I don’t need to fear and to ask God to help me to trust Him.

In John 14:27 (NIV), Jesus says:

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

In Matthew 6:25-34 (NIV), Jesus says:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. "

In Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT), Paul writes:

'Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.'
